>>> The thing with funk is that a great deal of the best songs were one off singles by groups who did nothing else and who most people haven't heard of.
There are also quite a few albums where clearly all the emphasis is on that one great dancefloor filler, with some other stuff put on the record. But that's true of most pop music honestly.
I do agree in a sense though, that I think there are really very few great 'only funk' albums. And maybe they're shouldn't be. If you have 8+ bits of music that are repeated funk riffs it can be quite hard going - I think funk is a great sound, but it needs other sounds to go with it. Light & Shade and all that.

I know you can only fit so much into a 1 hour doc, but that was lightweight. Made by BBC WALES. Bogus.

It would appear that Alex V has surpassed himself in being a clueless fucking idiot. How anyone can keep mentioning Level 42 on a thread about funk, without any trace of irony, is frankly staggering.

Prefer the funk period just as it was coming out of the R&B era around 1966-71 ...a lot grittier & menacing than the smoother 70s pastiche that it later became. Probably the drugs going from amphetamines to coke -->

Fair enough. Each to their own. Haven't watched prog yet but if it's too much Level 42 and Jamiroquai and not The Meters, War even the Temptations (later period) I will be riled.

Level 42 couldn't be more out of fashion (if they were ever in it) and their later stuff does tend to seem a bit too slick and bland. But at their best there's simply no other band that sounds like them - good or bad they are utterly unique imo. Considered as a pop band they're ordinary - in funk mode they're wonderful imo.

A lot of Duran Duran stuff is very funky imo. Some of The Police, too. I was listening to mid-80s Scritti Politti recently - that is basically funk. It's not all black people with afros.
It mainly is though.

Not knocking Sly & The Family Stone, who I think overall are one of the most interesting bands of the whole era. And obviously you have to trace that bass sound for example right back to them. Massively influential. But as you say, a big chunk of their material is not funk as it pre-dates it. I just think a lot of the music of that early 70s period (and certainly before) is really soul music with a growing funk influence - I find it somehow a bit dry for my tastes at times, personally.
